Carole King is one of the most successful and influential songwriters in American popular music. Beginning as a teenager in New York’s legendary Brill Building, she and lyricist Gerry Goffin created an extraordinary string of hits for artists including the Shirelles, the Drifters, and the Monkees. In this virtual lecture, composer/producer Edward Barnes traces King’s remarkable journey from behind-the-scenes songwriter to one of the defining voices of the singer-songwriter era. Following her move to Los Angeles and the musical community of Laurel Canyon, King stepped out from behind the songs and found her own voice as a performer. The result was Tapestry, the landmark 1971 album that became one of the best-selling records of its generation.
